If you are starting your own business, you already know how important it is to have an online presence. If you don’t have the budget available to have one created for you, WordPress is a valuable option that will help you get the exposure you need for your growing business. Keep reading to find out how you can start your online business using WordPress – it’s easier than you think!
WordPress.com or Your Own Domain
If you already have your own domain name, you will want to set up WordPress on it. If you don’t have one yet, or you don’t currently pay for hosting, you have the option of hosting your website on the WordPress.com website. If you do this, your email address will be ad supported, and have a name such as YourWebsiteName.WordPress.com. You will also have the option to pay for a domain that WordPress will host on its servers.
If you don’t want to deal with the added expense when you are just starting your business, using the free option is fine. However, as your business grows, you should really consider finding a hosting service or using WordPress’ hosting so you can have your own domain, as well as some of the additional features and ad-free hosting. For the purposes of this post, we will walk you through the free service.
You’ll need to register to get started with WordPress. Part of the registering process will require you to enter a URL for your site. Enter the one that you wish to use. If it is already taken, WordPress will provide similar URLs that are available so you can choose one that you like best. Once you’ve completed the registration, you will have to go to your email in order to activate your account.
Choosing a Template
After signing up for WordPress, you’ll need to select a template to use for your website. There are a variety of free and paid templates available, and you just need to find one that fits with the vision you have of your website. You will also be asked to provide a title for your site. If you aren’t sure what you want to use, just enter a working title to get started – you can go back and change it when you come up with something you like better.
Connecting to Social Media
The next step in getting started with WordPress will be connecting your blogging site to your social media accounts. If you don’t have these set up yet, you can skip this for now; however, social media such as Facebook and Twitter are both great ways to increase your exposure.
Once you’ve completed the setup process, you’ll be ready to create your first blog post. Simply add a title and choose the options you want to use for text and whether you want to add media. Now you can create your very first WordPress blog for your new business.
After you’ve written your post (or before if you prefer), you need to fill out your About page so that readers and potential clients know who you are and what you offer.
